Why I Invented the Cat Cache

I’ve had several cats in my lifetime. After the loss of my best boy, George, although I loved him dearly, I decided I was just done with the mess and smell of nasty litter boxes. So, I decided NOT to get another cat.
As fate would have it, however, I ran across a tiny feral kitten in the alley behind my house. I just knew she wouldn’t survive the coming winter, so I decided to rescue her. She became my best friend and companion; her litter box, not so much.
After many months of messy litter box cleanings. bending down over the box,  breathing in the toxic fumes, I was determined to solve all the problems that go along with cleaning a litter box.

So, after much trial and error, I did! Now, I want to share it with every cat lover because I know I’m not the only one that deals with this dilemma!

How did I do it? I started with the litter box itself.

Say goodbye to the litter box on the floor!

I reasoned that since we can never be more than an arms distance away from something we’re doing with our hands, why not bring the litter up to about where my kitchen counters are? So, I brought it waist-high! I thought, “what is it doing down on the floor anyway?”  That way I am not buckling my knees and leaning over the germ-filled litter dust.

What a difference this simple change made! It has to compare to the day they brought the outhouse “in-house”. I thought, “what was it doing outside anyway?”

The hazard of taxing the knees, and breathing in the germ-filled litter dust was no longer an issue. One problem was now fixed.

The next problem, coming in close 2nd, was the question of where in the house to put the litter box. Not everyone has a place to hide it out of sight and smell. So…

Say goodbye to litter box location issues!

My home is pretty open. There is no place to store a litter box out of the way of myself and guests. I only have one bathroom. I didn’t want it in the kitchen or my bedrooms. So, that left the living room or dining room. Then I had a thought. What do you find in a living room? Furniture! I could put the litter box in a cabinet!

I started sketching out litter box cabinet designs. I measured my litter box, my litter container, my used litter container. This cabinet would hold not just the litter box, but extra litter, and a bucket for used litter. This way it could be located anywhere in the house, go undetected for what it actually is, and offer organization and appeal. From the basement to the living room or anywhere in between, it just looked like a beautiful piece of furniture.

All in all, I had 12 prototypes. While they all looked good, I decided on one size and style. One that solved more than just the problem of where to put the litter box, but also where to put all the “stuff” that goes along with it, and be easy for me to clean and my cat to use.

Say goodbye to storing litter box supplies all over!

My final litter cabinet design included space to store EVERYTHING litter box related. I allocated a spot in the cabinet for all the supplies needed: litter scoop, extra litter, dirty litter container, trash bags, vacuum, cleaning wipes and more.

When I brought everything together in one place, after having raised the litter box so I could manage it less painfully, I was finishing the once dreaded chore in less than half the time! Hallelujah! I did it without having to trek all over the house and bring in the needed supplies. When I scooped the litter, it got thrown away right there. When I added more litter, it got done right there.

I closed the doors and all of the cat litter items were neatly hidden away.

Say goodbye to “one-size-fits-all” that doesn’t!

While I had designed it for myself, there were a lot of comments on my litter box storage cabinet from friends and family, and I realized that everyone has different needs, buy many sizes of litter containers, sizes of litter boxes, and prefer several methods to store used litter. So, I went back to the drawing board and created different interior configurations to accommodate a range of litter containers, litter boxes, and disposal containers.

My living room became a workshop as I built different cabinets with different interior configurations. I made sure 5-gallon buckets fit, 2-gallon buckets, step trash cans, even a Litter Genie will fit in one design!  The removable shelf cache will open up room for a kitchen-sized trash can if you prefer. They will hold jugs, pails, bags, or boxes of litter.

Say goodbye to the litter being tracked through the house!

The design of the upper-level litter box in The Cat Cache naturally allows the majority of the litter to be removed from your cat’s paws before exiting. I have found that a small rubber welcome mat, placed just outside the litter box, reduces litter tracking outside of the Cat Cache to virtually nothing.

I have also allotted space for a small shop vac. It has space for a 1-gallon or 1.5-gallon shop vac, and believe me, they do a good job of cleaning up that loose litter that would otherwise be tracked through the house!

There was just one more thing I had to figure out. A lot of us cat lovers have dogs, too, and dogs seem to really like getting in the cat litter.

Say goodbye to dogs getting in the litter box!

The cache’s passageway is generally too small and difficult for a dog to navigate. With an opening of only 7.25 inches wide, steps on the inside, and a turn to get to the litter box, all except the smallest of dogs will be able to reach the litter box. Your cat will have the privacy it craves, and your house will be kept clean.

So, now that my cat has a private, easy-to-clean bathroom, located in a cabinet that looks like it belongs anywhere in the house, it’s time for YOU to have your own Cat Cache!
